Kannada people celebrate the satyanarayan pooja as per the shaka roop or as per lunar months. Now we will talk about the pooja in detail and also discuss its importance. The writer is going to describe why and how the satyanarayan pooja is celebrated by Kannada people and how it is important for them, but first they will give some background information on it. Shatanarayana pooja is one of the oldest rituals that are still being carried out by Kannada people. There are some theories about this, but we will first give a brief description; we will discuss the theories later. The word satyanarayan itself means hundred eight and all that. The first question that arises at this point is: why should there be 108 names to an almighty and omniscient god? Ah! But those names need not be spoken; it must be mentioned; it should be known. Nobody can reach his presence without knowing about them. The other question that arises is that, what are the benefits of knowing about those names? Why cramming 108 names? To understand this, first one needs to know how the shatanarayana pooja is celebrated. The rituals should be followed as per shaka roop or lunar months. One can do it on any full moon day of Vaishaka masa.(This is the first month of the two-month Chaturmas period(the four months starting from Ashwayuja Krishna Ashtami till Kartika Krishna Amshtami). The important thing to remember is that one should not do it on two consecutive days or two days in a row, but rather make it on different days, 10 to 12 days apart. This pooja should start with the awakening of the god. The next important thing is that while performing this ritual, one should remember the names of the god. So here also, while performing this pooja, one has to learn 108 names of god shatanarayana. One who knows about these names should perform this pooja with all humility and devotion. While performing this pooja many devotees are not aware of these rules/do not keep that in mind/dont think about it(at least knowingly). There are many theories about the importance of this pooja. Some say that it is to get rid of enemies and problems and some say that it is only a prayer and one should not expect any benefits from it. Still others say that 108 names represent the 108 directions that we can see in life; we can see god in every direction; God gives blessings equally to all. Now let us discuss these theories.
